IndiCS.InfO stands for India with Common Sense for the Informed Outsider. The site is about India, but run by a non-Indian and mainly intended for non-Indians. Indians and expats are of course welcome to visit, comment and agree or disagree. Our mission is to give you unbiased information about various aspects of this country, in a way that makes sense to an outsider while remaining mostly accurate - to help you become an Informed Outsider adept in Indics. Someone who can see the diversity, the strangeness and the intensity of India and feel wonderment and awe, but who needn't put on various-coloured glasses to see what is not there, and can actually understand and put in context at least some of what they see.
If this is your first visit here, you might want to read the help pages and the About page.
IndiCS.InfO will be expanded gradually, with more articles added to the existing columns, and a couple of new columns too. The growth of the site depends upon you, the user, too: if you register, you'll be able to post content yourself.

The set of sounds (or phonemes) in the English language is rather different from that of most Indian languages, and a substantial amount of pronunciation information is lost when a word from one of these languages is transcribed to English. If you want to know how an Indian word is really spelt in the language it comes from (and how to pronounce that), then the IndiCS.InfO Glossary is your friend. But to be able to make the most of it, you are advised to familiarise yourself with the notation used in it.

Wow! The first article on this site. Like a seed that sprouts its first leaves and will grow into a huge tree like the
banyan. Now I should try to tell you something about what this is and why I'm doing it.
