Essentials
The original meaning of the Sanskrit word sādhu is simply “good”, derived from a verbal root meaning “to accomplish, to succeed”. The word is used in Sanskrit as a general term of address, somewhat like “goodman" in English, and also frequently appears as a sort of congratulation, “excellent” or “bravo”.
In modern-day India, however, the term sadhu is used almost exclusively for Hindu ascetics and mendicants, and has become more or less a synonym of sannyasin.
