dhobi ghats are used generation by generation, pounding loads and loads of clothes on them every day. The stones do get worn away.

The presence of death in Varanasi is not a stifling pall. The city is suffused with an incredibly vibrant aliveness, which the canvas of death only sets of and enhances. For most residents death is not the terrible end, merely a departure from this world, and a wonderful thing.
