Applying an oily massage to the head is an ancient custom in India. Coconut or other vegetable oil enriched with essential oils and herbal extracts is good for hair and scalp, while the vigorous massage itself boosts blood circulation in the scalp.

Chāṃpo! - says the rich guy to his manservant when he wants a head massage. English colonists tried to imitate them and most of them ended up saying Shampoo! The word's meaning then included the oil used for the head rub, and finally spread to the rest of the world in this sense.
