Submitted by: Admin. Published on: June 22, 2008
Quick Answer: The name of a mediaeval fortress and empire in South India.

The fortress of Golconda (usually spelt Golkonda nowadays) was probably founded in the 11th century. In later centuries Hyderabad, now the capital of Andhra Pradesh, rose up right next to it. In the 16th century Golkonda became the seat of one of the five Deccan Sultanates (the country it ruled was also called Golkonda) and controlled a number of diamond and other gemstone mines in South India. This was when they piled up the fabulous wealth with which the word Golconda is synonymous in the West. As a contrast to the grandeur, the actual name is said to mean Shepherd's Hill in Kannada.
