The first ancestors of the Indian Jewsish community - now dwindled to a tiny fraction of the population - probably arrived in the land in 587 BC with the Jewish Diaspora, fleeing Nebuchadnezzar. These first immigrants had intermarried with locals, and so when centuries later new waves of Jewish settlers appeared, they called this first wave "Black Jews".
